Founded in 1934, the Academy of American Poets is the nation’s largest member-supported cultural organization championing poets and poetry in the U.S. Our mission is to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry and to support poets at all stages of their careers. To accomplish this, we bring attention to poets by showcasing their poems, essays and interviews in our digital and print publications, namely, Poem-a-Day series, American Poets magazine, as well as on our active social media channels. During National Poetry Month, which we founded and continue to organize, we promote readers’ engagement with poetry and offer a special project for students that invites them to learn more about contemporary poets. We create opportunities for poets and readers to interact at live readings and convenings, both in New York City where we are headquartered, and in other cities across the U.S., such as Boston and Miami, with partner organizations. We honor outstanding artistic achievement by American poets with a collection of prestigious annual prizes. And, we inspire educators and students to respectively teach and pursue poetry by offering resources in an Educator Newsletter and on We aim to represent the best and breadth of American Poetry, recognizing that poets’ work today exists contemporaneously with that of historical American poets. Taken together, our programs aim to fuel national interest in and conversation about great American poetry.
